Michelle Garnaut built restaurants that changed how people thought about dining in China. Her approach was never about expansion or scale, but about creating spaces that felt personal, intelligent and alive. From M at the Fringe in Hong Kong to M on the Bund in Shanghai and Capital M in Beijing, she gave each city something it didn’t yet know it needed: a place to eat well, think freely and feel at home.

When she opened M on the Bund in 1999, the waterfront was quiet, its buildings tired and forgotten. Garnaut saw possibility where others saw decline, creating a restaurant that helped define Shanghai’s modern identity. But M on the Bund was never just a restaurant. Under her guidance, it became a salon for exchange and a home for writers, artists, musicians and thinkers. She founded the Shanghai International Literary Festival, one of the first of its kind in mainland China, alongside art salons and chamber concerts that brought creativity into daily life long before such programming became fashionable.

Over more than three decades, Garnaut’s influence has extended beyond her dining rooms. She championed independent hospitality when few dared to, proving that restaurants could nurture culture as much as they serve cuisine. Her work has left an enduring mark on Asia’s dining landscape: not as a series of openings or accolades, but as a legacy of warmth, intellect and the belief that a restaurant can open minds as easily as it opens doors.
