Michael Widjaja

CEO, Sinar Mas Land

A nember of the third generation of one of Indonesia’s most notable business families, CEO Michael Widjaja of Sinar Mas Land is one of the country’s real estate major players

Sinar Mas Land CEO Michael Widjaja is part of the new breed of Indonesian scions re-invigorating family-run businesses by investing in the future. One of Widjaja’s big moves for Sinar Mas was showing early interest in Indonesia’s vibrant tech sector by investing in home-grown firms and start-ups.

Widjaja’s grandfather, the late Eka Tjipta Widjaja, built the Sinar Mas global conglomerate from nothing. From selling biscuits and sweets from a bicycle, he founded Sinar Mas in 1938. When the patriarch died in 2019, his children and grandchildren took over vital roles in the company.

Now with almost 20 companies listed under its name, Sinar Mas has stakes across the corporate board in energy, real estate, financial services, telecommunications and mining. Its real estate portfolio includes shopping centres, office buildings, apartments and hotels such as the Grand Hyatt Jakarta.

Michael Widjaja graduated from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California in the US, majoring in International Relations and Global Business. He joined PT Duta Pertiwi Tbk, where he served as Deputy President Director. He subsequently became Commissioner of PT Golden Energy Mines Tbk, and eventually the Vice-President Commissioner of PT Dian Swastatika Sentosa Tbk until 2011.
