Co-founder, Namesake
The Hypesters | Michael Hsieh co-founded designer brand Namesake with his brothers Steve and Richard
Michael Hsieh is a co-founder of the Taiwanese designer brand Namesake. Along with his brothers Steve and Richard, they established the brand in 2020, drawing inspiration from their multicultural upbringing in Tokyo, Los Angeles, and Taiwan.
Hsieh and his brothers credit their father as their mentor, and have created a brand that emphasises the importance of familial bonds and shared heritage. Blending street fashion with avant-garde elements, Namesake has attracted a loyal fanbase and gained a foothold in the international market. Within just a year of its inception, Namesake made waves on the international stage by participating in Paris Men’s Fashion Week, a notable achievement that set the tone for their burgeoning brand.
By 2023, Namesake reached the semifinals of the esteemed LVMH Prize and has been featured in music videos for the popular K-pop group NewJeans, solidifying its position as a trailblazer in Taiwan’s fashion landscape.
Central to the design philosophy of Namesake is its commitment to authenticity and storytelling. Its collections often draw inspiration from the brothers’ collective experiences, particularly their love for basketball and the rich tales from their family travels. The brand is not merely about clothing; it represents a dialogue between generations, where each piece tells a story crafted by one generation and relayed by the next.
