Pan-United Corporation CEO May Ng has cemented the fortunes of her family business as it expands internationally

Ready-mixed concrete and cement supplier Pan-United Corporation had its beginnings as a marine-equipment supplier co-founded in 1958 by CEO May Ng’s father, Ng Kar Cheong. The firm expanded its portfolio by entering the construction business seven years later, and its regional prospects only grew from there.

Pan-United ventured into the aggregate (crushed basalt rock) quarrying business in Indonesia in 1990, and did likewise in Malaysia a decade later. It established United Cement as a joint venture with Kedah Cement in 1990; the former is now a wholly owned subsidiary. Pan-United Concrete, launched in 1999 as a ready-mixed concrete supplier in Singapore, expanded to Vietnam with a joint-venture company 12 years later. The company also opened a high-capacity concrete batching plant in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2016, and a slag-grinding plant in Johor, Malaysia in 2018.

In Singapore, the firm has been a supplier to high-profile projects such as Jewel Changi Airport, Gardens by the Bay, Singapore Sports Hub, Helix Bridge, and Tampines Concourse, the first carbon-neutral building in the Asia-Pacific. Pan-United brought its eco-friendly credentials to the fore by using PanU Green in the construction of Tampines Concourse; this stronger structural concrete mix is made with recycled raw materials.

Under Ng’s stewardship, the company has invested in a research and development facility that designs tailor-made concrete products for clients, and has set its sights on strengthening its position as a global leader in sustainable concrete technologies.
