An astute businesswoman, Mavis Khoo-Oei—chairman of Goodwood Park Hotel—is also a champion of healthcare and education

Singaporean businesswoman Mavis Khoo-Oei is the chairman of the heritage Goodwood Park Hotel and daughter of the late hotelier and banker Tan Sri Khoo Teck Puat, who notably founded Maybank in 1960. She was also a director at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH), a medical establishment in Yishun which was established in 2010 and named after her late father.

Khoo-Oei started work at Goodwood Park Hotel in 1965, and climbed the ranks to become general manager in 1978. She was appointed as chairman in 2004, and today oversees all aspects of the hospitality chain’s business dealings.

A philanthropist at heart, Khoo-Oei is the founder and governing director of the Humphrey Oei Foundation, which is named after her late husband and supports causes pertaining to medical research, healthcare and education as a trustee of her father’s estate. Khoo-Oei donated SG$20 million to the National Cancer Centre in 2007 in memory of her husband, who had died of colon cancer. She also donated SG$100,000 to KTPH for a nursing scholarship fund in 2017; the hospital launched the Mavis Khoo Nursing Leaders Scholarship in August the following year.

The Khoo Teck Puat Foundation, where she is a patron, supports scientists from Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore General Hospital, National Cancer Centre and National University of Singapore to develop a saliva antigen rapid test that is just as accurate as the polymerase chain reaction test but takes only around 15 minutes to detect Covid-19.
