Masagos Zulkifli

Minister for Social and Family Development, Ministry of Social and Family Development

A trailblazer for the Malay-Muslim community in Singapore politics, Masagos Zulkifli worked in telecoms before entering parliament and eventually becoming the Minister for Social and Family Development

Masagos Zulkifli is Singapore’s Minister for Social and Family Development, Second Minister for Health and Minister-in-Charge of Muslim Affairs.

Before his political career, Zulkifli worked at Singapore Telecommunications, last holding the position of chief executive of SingTel Global Offices. He contested the 2006 General Election as part of a five-member People’s Action Party (PAP) team in Tampines Group Representation Constituency, and was elected as a Member of Parliament after the PAP team won. Zulkifli was also named Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Education, rising to be Minister of State at said ministry four years later.

Zulkifli’s promotion from Senior Minister of State to Second Minister—a full ministerial post—at the Ministries for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs in 2015 was significant, as it represented the first time two Malay full ministers were in Parliament (the other was now-retired Communications and Information Minister Yaacob Ibrahim). Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong commented at the time that it reflected the “progress of the Malay community”.

Zulkifli was named Minister-in-Charge of Muslim Affairs in May 2018, and appointed to his current roles at the Ministries for Social and Family Development and Health in July 2020.
