In 2022, Martika Escobar became the first Philippine director to win an award at the Sundance Film Festival, scooping the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Innovative Spirit for her debut film, Leonor Will Never Die. A comedy drama homage to vintage Filipino action movies, about a screenwriter in a coma who finds herself starring in her own screenplay, the film took her eight years to complete.
