Turning a news start-up into a digital empire, Mario Yang looks at the world through The New Lens

When Mario Yang co-founded The News Lens in 2013, the independent Chinese-English bilingual website faced stiff competition from giant cable news channels and traditional print media. Now the website has content partnerships with outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, Fortune, Time, and Foreign Policy.

As chief content officer, Yang leads the editorial teams of TNL in providing an alternative to Taiwan’s news outlets for its mostly millennial audience, covering news within Greater China and around the world with an independent voice. The News Lens’ content is aimed at overseas Chinese and foreigners in Taiwan who are concerned about Asian news while its commentary is positioned as “independent”.

Prior to TNL, Yang was senior editor at Business Weekly, where he managed its web content, aggregated the daily business news, and wrote a tech column. He was formerly the editor of CNET Networks and covered mobile, software, GPS, and gaming stories, as well as managed CNET Taiwan’s consumer tech channel.
