Former film critic Makbul Mubarak has won near universal acclaim for his 2022 drama Autobiography, which uses the relationship between a retired general and his housekeeper as a lens to study social disparities in Indonesia. After premiering at the Venice Film Festival, where it won a Fipresci prize, the film has also taken home gongs at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and numerous film festivals worldwide, from Singapore to Taipei to Stockholm.
