Co-founder, Art SG

The international art world pioneer is renowned for launching art fairs in Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo

Magnus Renfrew is a leading light in the international art world. He spent more than two decades shaping and transforming the Asia-Pacific art landscape through his work at Art Assembly, co-founded with Sandy Angus and Tim Etchells in 2008.

As co-chairman and global director of Art Assembly, Renfrew organises six of the region’s most important art fairs, including Photofairs Shanghai, Sydney Contemporary, India Art Fair and Taipei Dangdai. In 2023, Art SG and Tokyo Gendai were added to that list, creating multiple touchpoints for art conversations throughout the year.

Art SG brought together more than 150 art galleries, including international heavyweights like Gagosian, Pace and White Cube, cementing Renfrew’s vision of turning Singapore into an art hub for Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific.

Renfrew’s extraordinary journey began with his founding of Art HK in 2007, which repositioned Hong Kong as the epicentre of the Asian art market. In 2012, he scored another coup by teaming up with Art Basel to launch Art Basel Hong Kong.

The World Economic Forum recognised Renfrew as a Young Global Leader in 2013, in honour of his outstanding contributions. Four years later, he published a book, Uncharted Territory: Culture and Commerce in Hong Kong’s Art World, delving into his experiences in the city’s art scene.
