After retiring as a four-star general in 1999, Luhut Pandjaitan held various positions as a government official, such as the ambassador to Singapore and Minister of Industry and Trade from 1999 to 2000. During the terms of President Joko Widodo, Luhut has led many different roles, sometimes as a fill-in for the incumbents. Those positions are, among others, Presidential Chief of Staff, Acting Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Coordinating Minister of Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment, Ad Interim Minister of Transportation, Head of the National Team for Increasing the Use of Domestic Production, and Deputy Chairperson of the Committee for Handling Covid-19 and National Economic Recovery. Meanwhile, his businesses span from natural resources to electricity generation and agriculture under Toba Sejahtera Group. Luhut also gives back to his hometown in North Sumatra through the Del Foundation, which educates gifted students from low-income families through the Del Institute of Technology. The foundation also established Del Unggul Senior High School in North Sumatra and NOAH school in Jakarta.
