Co-founder and president Lucy Liu has turned Airwallex into a fintech titan

The co-founder and president of online payments company Airwallex, Lucy Liu takes care of the company’s branding and operations. She started the company in 2015 with four friends, taking the role of chief operating officer; she became its president in 2018. Airwallex, launched in Melbourne and headquartered in Hong Kong, allows businesses to bypass the traditional financial system and make international payments quickly, transparently and cheaply. It employs more than 800 people in 12 offices, and in 2021 it raised US$200 million in a funding round that valued the company at about US$4 billion.

Liu was formerly a director of investment company Stone Investment Development in Hong Kong for more than six years, and before that an investment consultant for investment banking firm CICC in Shanghai. She has also served as an advisor to the University of Melbourne’s accelerator programme.
