Lucky Kuswandi

Movie Director

Film-maker, screenwriter and teacher, Lucky Kuswandi is a force convincing international audiences to pay attention to Indonesian films

Since his career in film began in 2006, Lucky Kuswandi has been awarded for his work, at times in areas of film-making that rarely see Indonesian stories. In 2015, his short film The Fox Exploits the Tiger's Might competed at the Cannes Film Festival under Semaine de la Critique (Critics’ Week), and became the first Indonesian film in 26 years screened in that category.

In the same year, that film went on to win Best Short Film & Best Director at the Silver Screen Awards in Singapore. It also gained Kuswandi his first Piala Citra Award at Indonesia’s equivalent to the Oscars for Best Short Film.

Kuswandi’s array of films have been screened at some of the biggest international festivals in the world, including Cannes, Tokyo and Berlin. His fourth and latest feature film, released in 2021, is a Netflix Original entitled Ali & Ratu Ratu Queens (Ali & Her Majesty The Queen Queens).

Aside from stacking up awards in the film industry, Kuswandi has been teaching film direction and production for ten years at Universitas Multimedia Nusantara, North Jakarta.
