Known locally as the “king of coal”, Singapore-born Low Tuck Kwong worked his way into the mining industry in his adopted country and became one of the richest men in Indonesia

An indomitable force in the Indonesian coal-mining industry, Low Tuck Kwong is the President Director, CEO and founder in 1972 of Bayan Resources, one of the lowest-cost mining companies in Indonesia. The firm went public in 2008, and it grew rapidly. To date, the concession area for its mining reserves total 126,293 hectares within East and South Kalimantan.

Tuck Kwong worked his way into the mining industry after working at his father’s construction company in Singapore as a young adult, then moving to Indonesia in 1972. It was later in 1997 that he acquired his first coal mine.

In 2014, Tuck Kwong was ranked 30th in the Forbes list of richest people in Indonesia. Apart from Bayan Resources, he also has a stake in Singapore shipping firm Manhattan Resources and Singapore Health Partners.

Tuck Kwong operates a zoo called Gunung Bayan Zoo full of exotic species in Muara Tae not far from the city of Balikpapan, near his coal-mining operation, where wild animals displaced by his company’s activities are kept.
