Senator, Republic of the Philippines
The multi-term senator is known for her extensive contributions to the promotion, preservation and deeper appreciation of Philippine arts and culture
Known for her extensive contributions across both chambers of Congress, Loren Legarda has carved a formidable legacy in Philippine governance. The journalist-turned-politician is currently serving her fourth term as a senator, making her the longest-serving female senator in the nation’s history. A dedicated environmentalist, her commitment is reflected in key legislation and her prestigious roles with the United Nations, including being a Global Champion for Resilience.
Beyond her environmental advocacy, Legarda is a fierce patron of Filipino culture, education and the arts. She has been pivotal in passing landmark legislations like the National Cultural Heritage Act and has driven the National Cultural Mapping Project. Her work brought the Philippines back to the Venice Biennale stage in 2016 and revived the National Arts and Crafts Fair, a vital platform for local artisans.
One of her most defining achievements came in 2025, when she secured the Philippines’ role as Guest of Honour at the Frankfurter Buchmesse—a cultural milestone a decade in the making. Achieved through years of sustained advocacy and despite pandemic setbacks, this recognition placed Filipino literature, identity and creative industries at the forefront of global attention. The pavilion’s reception transformed international perceptions of the Philippines, celebrating the country as a nation of storytellers and cultural innovators.
Legarda continues to advance critical reforms as chair of the Senate Committee on Higher, Technical and Vocational Education and as co-chair of EDCOM 2. Her current work includes strengthening education systems, supporting indigenous knowledge, and protecting vulnerable communities amid climate challenges. Key measures she is pursuing include the Last Mile Schools bill, the Higher Education Development and Innovation bill, the Blue Economy bill and the institutionalisation of Schools of Living Traditions.
