Loren Legarda

Congresswoman, Republic of the Philippines

Former broadcast journalist and career politician Loren Legarda remains a prominent figure in the Philippines’ national government.

As of writing, Loren Legarda is a congresswoman representing the lone district of Antique. She’s served in this capacity since being elected in 2019, but is eyeing a seat in the Senate in the 2022 national elections. If she wins, it would be her third stint as a senator—she served from 1998 to 2004 and then again from 2007 to 2019. She has also been a vice presidential candidate twice: in 2004, running with Fernando Poe Jr, and in 2010, running with Manny Villar. Though neither of their bids succeeded, Legarda has clearly continued to be a force in national politics.

Legarda is well-known as an environmentalist as well. This reflects in her legislative efforts, but also in roles that she’s taken up with the United Nations. She was a 2001 Laureate of the United Nations Environment Programme, and was a 2008 Regional Champion for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation for Asia and the Pacific as declared by the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction. In 2015 she was declared by the United Nations as a Global Champion for Resilience.

She’s also been a champion of Filipino culture, education, and the arts. She was largely instrumental to the Philippines' return to the international stage in 2016 through the Art and Architecture biennale held in Venice.
