Appointed as Secretary of Health in the Hong Kong government in 2022, Lo Chung-mau quickly became known for taking a tough line on Covid-related restrictions in the city. Before taking on the political role, he had established a formidable reputation as a medical doctor, with a particular expertise in liver transplants, which he helped to transform globally with his most important innovation, in adult right lobe living donor liver transplantation.

He was previously chief executive of The University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital from 2016 to 2022, as well as chair of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at The University of Hong Kong, and director of the Liver Transplantation Centre at Queen Mary Hospital. He has published more than 600 articles in major scientific journals, and has been on the boards of several of them, inlcuding the American Journal of Transplantation, Liver Transplantation, Surgery and Annals of Surgery.

He has been the president of the International Liver Transplantation Society and the International Society for Digestive Surgery. The holder of a Bronze Bauhinia Star, he is also a recipient of the First-class State Scientific and Technological Progress Award, China’s top scientific honour.
