Liu Yulin

Film director

 

Liu Yulin graduated from the Graduate Film programme of the TISCH School of the Arts at NYU. When she was 27 years old, the short film Door God that she directed won the silver medal at the Student Academy Awards, the equivalent of the student Oscars. Door God was also nominated at more than 50 renowned film festivals including the Directors Guild of America Student Film Awards – East Region, the Cannes Film Festival, and the Tokyo Film Festival. In 2016, Liu directed her first long film Someone to Talk to, which was adapted from her father Liu Zhenyun’s novel, One Sentence is Ten Thousand Sentences, which won the 8th Mao Dun Literary Prize. Since its global release in 2016, the film has been well received by movie-goers and recognised at a number of both domestic and international film festivals. It was selected for the 3rd Silk Road International Film Festival, the 38th Cairo International Film Festival and the Hong Kong Asia Film Festival; nominated for the New Currents Award at the 21st Busan International Film Festival; nominated for “Best Supporting Actress” at the 53rd Golden Horse Awards; and nominated for Best Actor and Best Young Director Awards at the China Film Director’s Guild Awards.
