Director, Wei-Ling Gallery and Wei-Ling Contemporary
A gallerist and cultural advocate who has elevated Malaysian contemporary art onto the global stage while championing heritage preservation
Lim Wei-Ling has been a driving force in Malaysia’s art landscape for more than two decades. As the founder and director of Wei-Ling Gallery, which she established in 2002, she has nurtured generations of Malaysian artists and transformed the country’s contemporary art scene into one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic. Under her leadership, Wei-Ling Gallery has become Malaysia’s largest commercial gallery, publishing over 120 art books and presenting Malaysian artists at prestigious international fairs including Art Basel Hong Kong.
In 2019, Lim made history by curating Malaysia’s first-ever national pavilion at the 58th La Biennale di Venezia, placing Malaysian contemporary art firmly on the global map. The gallery marked its 20th anniversary through 2024–2025 with the 10,000 Book Project, donating RM 350,000 worth of art publications to schools across Peninsular Malaysia to promote arts education and access. Recent curatorial highlights under her direction include the WLG Incubator Young Artists Show 2024, featuring rising talents Lee Mok Yee and Ryan Naga, and participation at SEA Focus 2025 in Singapore, where Wei-Ling Gallery showcased Malaysian artists Ivan Lam and Rajinder Singh.
Beyond her curatorial achievements, Lim also serves as president of Badan Warisan Malaysia, an NGO devoted to preserving Malaysia’s architectural and cultural heritage—a reflection of her belief that contemporary creativity and historical legacy are inseparable parts of national identity. Through both roles, she continues to champion Malaysia’s cultural expression on local and international stages.
