An award-winning architect shaping Malaysia’s urban landscape through sustainable design, cultural expression and advocacy for women in architecture
An alumna of Princeton University (Master of Architecture) and an early career stint at Kohn Pedersen Fox in New York, Lillian Tay returned to Kuala Lumpur to help evolve Veritas into one of Malaysia’s leading multi-disciplinary design practices. She leads the design team at Veritas and is known for her commitment to sustainable, context-sensitive architecture rooted in local climate and culture.
Her work over recent years demonstrates a strong sustainability and awards-driven focus: notable projects between 2024–2025 include the eco-friendly PKNS Headquarters in Shah Alam (flagship green building integrating passive-cooling design), the multiple-residence Suria Hills which won the 2024 Asia Pacific Property Award for Best Architecture Multiple Residence in Malaysia, the luxury hotel Imperial Lexis awarded the 2024 Asia Pacific Property Award for Hotel Architecture, the M Social development which also captured a 2024 Asia Pacific Property Award (Development Award), the landmark Petronas Leadership Centre which garnered the National Energy Award 2024 (Tropical Building category), the ASEAN Energy Award for Tropical Building – Energy Efficient Building, the Malaysian Landscape Architecture Honour Award, the BlueScope Steel Architectural Silver Award and a silver win at the 2024 World Prix d’Excellence Award (Purpose-Built category), the Earth Conscious Award for Avaland Avenue 25 at the Star Property Awards 2024, the Best Family Centric Development – High-rise for Southkey Nadi Residences (Star Property Awards), the Commendation Award for Multiple Residential High-Rise Category (Malaysian Institute of Architects, PAM, 2024) for Star Residence, as well as green-certified workspace UOB Plaza 1. These successes underline her leadership in pushing Veritas’ sustainable-design agenda and collecting industry accolades.
In 2023 Tay became the first woman to receive the PAM Gold Medal from the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), recognising a lifetime of design achievement. Tatler Asia She continues to be a sought-after speaker and design leader, advocating for better gender representation in architecture and ambitious sustainability goals.
