Datuk Leong Mun Yee

Malaysian diver Leong Mun Yee is the first female Malaysian athlete to qualify for five Olympic Games (Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Tokyo 2020) and made it into the Malaysian Book of Records for her achievement.

Originally a swimmer, she was turned to diving at age 10 after being chosen to be part of the country’s pioneer diving team to participate at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. In 2009, she made Malaysian history as one half of the diving duo with her partner Pandelela Rinong to win the country’s first ever diving medal at the World Aquatics Championships in 2009, winning the 10m synchronised platform.

She and Pandelela went on to win another bronze in the same event at the World Championships in 2013 and a silver in 2019. Leong is also a SEA Games and Fina Diving Grand Prix gold medallist and has a string of podium finishes at the Commonwealth Games, Diving World Cup, Diving World Series and the Asian Games.

Leong considers education to be very important and has a degree in communcations from Universiti Putra Malaysia. She is currently pursuing her masters degree in corporate communicationAfter representing Malaysia for over 25 years, Leong’s announced her retirement after her fifth and final Olympic outing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She is now looking forward to setting up her own diving academy to encourage more more children to take up the sport and nurture future divers to represent the country.
