Tan Sri Leong Hoy Kum

A Malaysian business magnate known for his prowess in diversifying

Profile

Tan Sri Leong Hoy Kum, the founder and chief executive of Mah Sing Group, one of the leading fully integrated property developers today, took over the company from his father, then a plastics trading firm at age 22. Under him, the company expanded into plastic manufacturing focusing on propriety products for the electrical and electronics industry and grew its business into Indonesia as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of large automative parts.

In 1994, he ventured into the property industry, which would end up becoming the group’s core business with more than 50 property projects throughout Malaysia comprising high-rise and landed residential developments, integrated commercial centres and niche industrial parks. More recently, the group has expanded into glove manufacturing, with plans to expand further into the healthcare sector, to manufacture and distribute personal protective equipment, pharmaceutical or medical products.

Mah Sing still remains one of the largest high-tech plastics manufacturer in Malaysia and one of the biggest player in the OEM market in Indonesia. Leong, who abides by the principle of always starting new ventures on the right foot to ensure its long-term viability, is married to Puan Sri Sulvian Leong and has three children who are all involved in the family business.
