The former vice president of the Philippines continues to inspire through leadership

The late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher once said, “If you want anything said, ask a man. If you want anything done, ask a woman.” It certainly took a woman to step up to the plate during the darkest days of the pandemic in the Philippines. In the final years of her term as vice president of the country, Leni Robredo truly embodied the spirit of volunteerism as she mobilised both the public and private sectors to assist in the effort to stem the tide of Covid’s spread in the country.

Her active presence was much noted during several natural disasters over the last two years. She would head to affected regions to see to the welfare of those hit hardest by storms or quakes, and rally volunteers to provide medical services, food and solace to victims. She performed her duties without fanfare, inspiring her fellow Filipinos and even those overseas who were moved by how actions marked her service rather than highfalutin rhetoric.

Robredo became a beacon of hope, especially for the younger generation, which included a sizeable number of first-time voters. She may not have won in her campaign for the presidency, but she continues to help as a private citizen. Thanks to the nascent Angat Buhay Foundation, which was announced the day after her concession, and her selection for the illustrious leadership programme of the Harvard Kennedy School’s Centre for Public Leadership, Robredo remains committed to the well-being of the Filipino people.

Leni Robredo’s lifestyle remains a talking point among onlookers as she continues to live simply. Her 100-square metre condominium in Manila is bigger, she claims, than her family’s home in her hometown of Naga.
