Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew

One of Malaysia’s most successful entrepreneurs, Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew is also one of its impactful humanitarians

Renowned Malaysian tycoon Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew is the founder of The Mines Resort and Country Heights Holdings, which has interests in property development, health, hospitality and education.

Lee is also a notable philanthropist; in 2020, his acts of goodwill were on full display with the launch of Bantu-Bantu Malaysia, a non-profit social initiative aimed at helping the country mitigate the spread of Covid-19 and weather the effects of the lockdown. Under Lee’s direction, more that 8 million masks were flown in to be distributed to frontliners, and additional medical supplies such as ventilators, safety goggles, surgical gowns and masks were donated to various government and private hospitals, including the country’s Covid-19 crisis centre at Sungai Buloh Hospital.

Lee later distributed 30,000 hampers that include rice bags and food essentials to food banks, the Social Welfare Department, the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans and NGOs. Bantu-Bantu Malaysia also initiated a cooked-food programme to serve orphanages, retirement homes, single mothers and foreign workers within 5km radius from Lee’s hotel, the Palace of Golden Horses.

After more than 30 years in the residential, commercial and recreational sectors, Lee announced in 2021 that he was stepping down as Country Heights Holdings Bhd to pursue his interest in cryptocurrencies.

Lee is married to Puan Sri Tan Bee Hong, and together they have five children.
