Lee Hsien Loong is a senior minister in the government of Singapore, appointed to the role after serving as its prime minister for twenty years, from August 2004 to May 2024. He is also the secretary-general of the ruling People’s Action Party.
Lee is the eldest son of Singapore’s first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew. He graduated with a mathematics degree and a diploma in computer science from the University of Cambridge, UK and also earned a Master’s in Public Administration as a Mason Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School. He joined the Singapore Armed Forces, attaining the rank of brigadier-general before entering politics in 1984. He subsequently held various ministerial appointments such as Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Finance, and Minister for Trade and Industry.
Lee’s achievements as Prime Minister include the Smart Nation initiative, which harnesses technology to enhance the standard of living and build stronger communities, and fosters upskilling and lifelong learning with the SkillsFuture programme.
He is also chairman of the Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC, as well as chairing the Research, Innovation and Enterprise Council, which provides strategic direction for Singapore’s research and development efforts.
Lee is married to Ho Ching, board member and chairman-designate of Temasek Trust, and former chief executive of sovereign state fund Temasek Holdings.

As a colonel in the Singapore Armed Forces, Lee Hsien Loong coordinated the rescue of the 13 people trapped in cable cars in the Sentosa cable-car tragedy of 1983, when the derrick of the drillship Eniwetok struck the cableway of the system, throwing two cars into the sea and killing seven riders.
