Lau Chee Kheong

Co-Founder, Group COO and Executive Director, UWC Berhad

The co-leader of a one-time Malaysian start-up, Lau Chee Keong has helped develop UWC Berhad into one of the country’s leading manufacturing companies, which now serves many of the world’s Fortune 500 companies

Lau Chee Kheong is the co-founder and group chief operating officer of UWC Berhad, a supporting services provider which supplies high-end engineering and manufacturing services to the semiconductor, telecom and life science industries.

Lau and his co-founder Dato’ Ng Chai Eng were former co-workers at Leader Electrical Appliances Manufacturing. The duo left to establish a trading company called Unique Wire Cut Sdn Bhd, setting up in a 500 square foot rental shop lot, to supply wire-cut machines imported from China to the semiconductor industry in Malaysia. Soon after, the company quickly began diversifying into metal fabrication services, producing loose components and modules for the semiconductor industry.

From sub-assembly, Lau and Eng developed full-assembly capabilities to produce whole machines, establishing themselves as an original equipment manufacturer for a diverse market segment. They made lifts, healthcare and medical products; items used in the security, telecommunications and engineering industries; even car components. To keep their overheads low, they expanded to Vietnam where the company focuses on manufacturing lower-end products.

From their tiny office rental to today’s manufacturing giant, today UWC has more than 10 factories in Malaysia and Vietnam. In 2019, UWC became a public-listed company on Bursa Malaysia.
