Inspired by the Swedish teenage climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, Lance Lau staged his first school strike in 2019 at age ten, entirely on his own, and soon overcame the scepticism of classmates, who began to join him in numbers. He has been staging his protests every Friday since, instantly recognisable for his homemade cardboard signs and his serious, bespectacled face as he campaigned on any number of fronts for a greener, more sustainable city—and world. He started giving speeches shortly after his first strike—he even co-hosted a 2020 TED talk with fellow climate activist Keilem Ng—and has appeared extensively in the media, becoming a much-admired local figure. He has said that when he grows up, he would like to become a green architect and help to tackle the challenges of sustainability head on.
