Co-founder and CEO, Dcard

Kytu Lin, founder of Dcard, is turning his social network into a platform for the social awakening of Taiwan’s youth

Lin co-founded Dcard, the country’s most popular social network, when he was 19 and studying computer science at the National Taiwan University in 2011. Back then, it only accepted registration of students from NTU and National Chengchi University. When it opened to other universities and non-college students, it quickly acquired four million registered members and 1.5 billion page views a month. It is now one of the most influential community platforms among ethnic groups in Taiwan.

While Bill Gates sparked Lin’s interest in programming, Steve Jobs inspired Lin’s sartorial choice of black or dark office wear. Lin is described as a “young entrepreneur with a very mature personality and a serious, hardworking attitude”. From being a match-making site (“D” stands for Destiny and “Card” refers to the randomness of attraction), Dcard has become a platform and a forum for young people to mobilise and have their opinions heard.

In April 2021, Dcard expanded internationally in addition to its existing markets in Taiwan and Hong Kong. It also entered Japan as Dtto, and set up local physical offices for a more diversified transnational services. The company also continues to innovate its business models, including advertising solutions, e-commerce, and IP investments. Its YouTube channel currently has more than 900,000 subscribers. As a major player in Taiwan’s fast-changing digital space, Dcard, under Lin’s leardership, aims to continue improving user experience and broaden Taiwan’s influence by expanding its international footprint.
