Kyla Zhao started writing during the pandemic while still a student at Stanford University, stung by anti-Asian racism and wanting to pen fiction with Asian characters in joyful central roles. The result was her debut novel The Fraud Squad, about a working-class woman’s adventures in Singaporean high society, which was published by Penguin Random House in 2023 and has been featured in media including Good Morning America, Vogue and Elle.
