Dr Kuldip Kaur

Director, Sungai Buloh Hospital

One of the healthcare leaders who led the fight against Covid-19 in the frontline, Kuldip Kaur of Sungai Buloh Hospital has been a Malaysian pandemic heroine over the last two years

Dr Kuldip Kaur is the director of Sungai Buloh Hospital (HSB), which has been at the forefront of the country’s fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. A healthcare professional for nearly 30 years, she previously served as the deputy director at Hospital Kuala Lumpur before she accepted the directorship of HSB just two months before the pandemic hit.

With HSB rapidly transforming into the epicentre of the country’s Covid-19 battle, Dr Kaur demonstrated great leadership and foresight in prepping the frontliners and the hospital to meet with the unprecedented demands brought on by the novel virus. Her role included making room in the wards to enable HSB to take in and care for as many patients; ensuring the hospital staff were kept safe with training on PPE usage and implementation of strict SOPs; and recruiting and training doctors from other departments to treat respiratory infections to help ease the burden of the core Covid-19 team as the wards became inundated with patients.

To maintain the smooth running of HSB throughout the pandemic, Dr Kaur implemented measures that would minimise risks of infections among staff. She ensured adherence to SOPs to make sure outbreaks were contained within the hospital, and provided mental-health support to her over-worked and psychologically overwhelmed colleagues.

In 2020, Kaur received the BrandLaureate Most Outstanding Best Brands e-Branding Award in the category of Healthcare—Centre of Excellence for Covid-19 pandemic.

"I think that all leaders have doubts, but I believe in communicating with others in order to make the best leadership decisions."
