Kuwan Wei Lu champions equal learning opportunities for underserved communities

Kuwan Wei Lu is the founder and chairman of Taiwan’s largest, non-profit online education portal, Junyi Academy. Using digital technology, Lu bridges the geographical gap that challenges the transfer of education resources between urban and rural areas. It is the first Taiwanese organization to receive a two-year US$1 million grant from Google.

A graduate from the Department of Medicine of National Taiwan University with a doctor’s license, Lu chose to invest in public welfare. Driven by the belief that “every child can be a lifelong learner”, he became a home tutor, using videos to fill in the deficiencies he observed in the K-12 education system. This led to the creation of Junyi Academy in 2012, a cloud platform that delivers equal learning opportunities to underserved communities. The site has over 10,000 free educational videos and millions of registered users.
