The Paralympic gold medallist in boccia is an advocate for inclusivity in sport
King Tse Tak-wah stands as a symbol of resilience and determination in Hong Kong’s para-athletics community. Tse competes in the BC3 classification for boccia—a precision ball sport requiring exceptional strategy and technical control. Over two decades after discovering boccia during his teenage years, Tse reached the pinnacle of his career by clinching gold in the mixed pairs BC3 event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. This achievement not only highlighted his personal dedication but also underscored the growing prominence of Hong Kong’s para-athletes on the global stage.
Tse's journey in boccia began with a casual interest during school, which gradually evolved into a passion. He became a full-time athlete in 2017 when government support for para-athletes expanded, allowing him to dedicate himself fully to the sport. Known for his meticulous training and strategic prowess, Tse competes regularly in international competitions. His dedication involves hours of repetitive practice to refine techniques and strategies, reinforcing his belief in persistent effort as the key to success.
Tse, who was diagnosed with cerbral palsy, advocates for greater recognition and opportunities for para-athletes. He hopes his journey inspires others with disabilities to pursue their potential, fostering a belief that hard work and confidence can lead to success on the world stage. His contributions extend to mentoring younger athletes, aiming to build a stronger and more inclusive community within para-sports.
Looking ahead, Tse is determined to maintain his competitive edge, with aspirations to participate in the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympics and other international events.
“You can’t rely on luck and get lazy—because luck doesn’t always last. Only through continuous, persistent effort can you achieve the results you want.”
