Award-winning architect and champion of biodiversity and sustainability as drivers of design
Khoo Peng Beng

Khoo Peng Beng is director and co-founder of Arc Studio Architecture + Urbanism, an architectural practice founded in 1999 that has made a name for itself with ground-breaking projects such as the upmarket Pinnacle @ Duxton in Tanjong Pagar, Wing Tai’s The Tembusu condominium at Tampines Road; and the freehold 91-unit One Balmoral on Balmoral Road.

Khoo runs the firm with his wife, fellow director and co-founder Belinda Huang; they were both named joint 2020 Designer of the Year at the President’s Design Awards Singapore for developing socially meaningful, community-focused projects and nurturing aspiring young architects. Khoo and Huang’s common design ethos is centred on an understanding of the house, the home and the family unit; the importance of community spaces; and a respect for nature and appreciation of sustainability.

Arc Studio Architecture + Urbanism has also ventured abroad with projects in locations such as Cambodia and Rwanda, building schools and working with NGOs to develop community spaces for less-privileged members of the community who live in poverty and need education. The firm was also involved in the development of self-sufficient eco-townships incorporating permaculture in the highlands of Malaysia, and is looking at doing work in Myanmar.

“We try to create designs that use not just material beauty, but the beauty of the community, trust, generosity, charity, and the more intangible aspects of architecture.”

Arc Studio Architecture + Urbanism has a philosophy in their office, which sort of represents how the couple works together: that there is never any bad idea. So, both Khoo and Huang always encourage everything to be said.
