The Cebu-based designer is showcasing Philippine craft and traditions on the global stage

Designer Kenneth Cobonpue was conferred an important recognition in September 2022 as the first Gawad sa Sining awardee for design, the highest distinction from the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), which he received for his significant contribution to Filipino arts and culture. His CCP recognition came shortly after a citation in April 2022, when his Dolce Bed won the top prize in the bedroom category of the International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA) Selects Awards.

Part of Cobonpue’s enduring success comes from his skilful blend of modernity and tradition, how he mines the raw materials of his home province of Cebu and his integration of local weaving methods with the latest technology. The current scenario, however, presents a dilemma: “The average age of the Filipino weaver, carver and craftsman is 50 years old,” the designer explained. “The children no longer want to work with their hands. Because of this, our rich tradition of craftsmanship and manufacturing will eventually die.”

He devotes time to the next generation of designers who can continue creating to give artisans a suitable livelihood. Cobonpue lectures worldwide while mentoring apprentices and teaching in design schools. He also works closely with some of the world's leading industrial designers, paving the way for the future of design in the Philippines and sharing his craft with the global community.

In July 2023, the designer unveiled his latest collection, The Loop & Barnacle Mirrors, in collaboration with Metrobank. In November 2023, Cobunpue was one of the honourees at Legends 2023, a scholarship benefit held at his alma mater, Pratt Institute. He was also recognised at the 2023 Tatler Ball with the Impact Award.

“I hope to inspire young people to use our resources and skills, so it becomes not only a means of employment but a source of pride for the country.”
