Founder, KENS Apothecary
A transformative force in Malaysia’s beauty retail scene, introducing niche luxury skincare and fragrance brands through KENS Apothecary
When Ken Lim opened the first KENS Apothecary in Bangsar in 1999 at just 27, he wasn't merely launching a store. The Penang-born entrepreneur, transitioning from a career as a financial controller, was introducing an entirely foreign concept to Malaysian consumers: curated luxury niche skincare and fragrance. At a time when men were virtually absent from beauty retail leadership, Lim possessed something rarer than the products he championed—an audacious belief that Malaysia was ready for sophistication.
What began as one store has since blossomed into seven strategically positioned locations spanning Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, The Gardens Mall, Bangsar Shopping Centre, Bangsar Village II, Sunway Pyramid, 1 Utama Shopping Centre and Plaza Gurney in Penang. Each outlet houses a curated selection of over 20 luxury brands now considered household names: Caudalie, Diptyque and Annick Goutal. Before Lim's curatorial vision brought them forward, these were whispers in luxury circles.
The breadth of his portfolio—spanning skincare, fragrances, grooming and accessories through brands like Creed, Dr. Barbara Sturm, Kilian and Oribe—demonstrates his uncompromising commitment to discovery across categories. The name itself became a strategic asset in an era when male beauty entrepreneurs were unprecedented.
Now entering his 25th year, Lim continues to expand his influence. The 2023 Pavilion concept store redefined the apothecary experience for younger consumers, while ongoing category expansion—including Diptyque’s TRX standalone store—signals his enduring ability to identify and nurture breakthrough brands before mainstream recognition. Lim is making the world's most compelling luxury beauty accessible to Malaysian consumers who demand authenticity over hype.
