Businesswoman and corporate lawyer, PT Tempo Scan Pacific

 

One of the country’s top corporate lawyers, Kartini Muljadi is also a businesswoman who slowly became the richest woman in Indonesia

Although her financial success is often attributed to the incredible growth of pharmaceutical group Tempo Scan, Kartini Muljadi’s career started out in the legal profession as a judge in Jakarta. She went on to run her own notary office and slowly gained popularity in the late 1970s.

At the same time, Muljadi assisted in the expansion of her family’s company Tempo Scan, which went on to become a commercial producer for Unilever and Boehringer Ingelheim. Tempo Scan Pacific also went into manufacturing and distributing consumer products and cosmetics for brands like M.A.C and Estée Lauder.

In 1990, Muljadi opened Muljadi & Rekan, her own law firm, where she utilised her expertise assisting big businesses like Tempo Scan, and went on to be known as one of the top legal consultants in corporate and commercial law.

It was later in 2013 that Muljadi sold a large amount of her shares in Tempo Scan and amassed a huge amount of wealth, placing her among the richest people in Indonesia.

In 2017, on her 87th birthday, Kartini Muljadi launched a book about batik, with Indonesian traditional drawings on fabric. She learned to love the traditional art of batik from her grandmother.
