The award-winning broadcast journalist optimises multimedia to become a positive influence

After 30 years in radio, television and, more recently, the digital space, broadcast journalist Karen Davila is still going strong. Davila begins at 8 a.m. with Headstart, a morning talk show for ABS-CBN’s News Channel (ANC). In the evening, she shares the essential stories of the day as co-host of TV Patrol. The broadcaster also spent 17 years with DZMM and DZMM TeleRadyo, both of which were crucial to her development in the industry.

On top of all that, she has a YouTube channel, which has gained traction since its launch in May 2021 and now has 1.6 million subscribers. “Viewing habits have changed,” Davila said. “The key is to remain relevant to growing audiences, and the only way to do it is to understand the platforms people watch.”

Known to be one of the most hardworking broadcasters, Davila has earned citations through the years. She received a bronze medal from CNN World Report, won the grand prize in the UNICEF Child Rights Awards for her documentary on children in jail and became a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum.

In 2023, she added Best News Anchor at the Asian Academy Creative Awards, Most Outstanding Female News Anchor at the fifth Gawad Lasallianeta and News Anchor of the Year at the fourth VP Choice Awards to her roster of awards. She also stepped into the groundbreaking role as the first UN Women Goodwill Ambassador from the Philippines, proving to the world that there is more to come.

“No shortcuts. Do the hard and dirty work. Learn the ropes and be 200 per cent in—because that’s when it makes a difference!”
