Juno Mak

Juno Mak makes movies that it’s impossible to take your eyes off. The director, writer and actor takes a highly stylised, experimental approach to filmmaking, crafting movies filled with eye-popping set pieces and defined by a sharp, industrially inflected visual aesthetic.

He made his debut as a filmmaker in 2013 with supernatural horror film Rigor Mortis, which he wrote and directed. A tribute to and evolution of the hugely successful Mr Vampire comedy-horror series from the 1980s, it featured several members of its cast, leaning more heavily into the horror elements than the comedic ones. It earned him three Golden Horse nominations, plus four at the Asian Film Awards and nine at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

He followed it up in 2025 with crime thriller Sons of the Neon Night, which features an all-star cast that includes Tony Leung, Sean Lau, Louis Koo and Takeshi Kaneshiro. Shot before the pandemic but seriously delayed, it tells a dark story of pharmaceutical industry double dealing and family conflict, set in a dystopian rendering of Causeway Bay, with a landscape covered in snow. The film, which had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, was soundtracked by the legendary Ryuichi Sakamoto, in one of his final compositions before his death.

Mak previously wrote and starred in Wong Ching-po’s Revenge: A Love Story (2010); and starred in and produced Wong’s Let’s Go! (2011). He made his first foray into the entertainment business as a singer in the early 2000s, and he has continued to produce music since. He is the son of Clement Mak, chairman of CCT Fortis Holdings, which has holdings from property to automotive to finance.
