Founder and CEO, The Reporter
Harnessing media as a public asset to drive societal progress
Jungshin Ho, a veteran journalist, previously served as head of the Municipal News Section at Liberty Times, deputy editor in chief and head of Investigative Reporting at China Times and chief editorial writer at CommonWealth Magazine. He is currently the founder and CEO of The Reporter, an independent media platform, and an adjunct associate professor in sociology at National Taiwan University.
Ho founded The Reporter on September 1, 2015, as a digital news outlet, committed to financial independence through public donations and rejecting advertisements, government contracts, grants or sponsored content. This approach preserves its editorial independence, enabling it to serve as a watchdog over government actions and a catalyst for policy reform.
Since its inception, The Reporter has published numerous impactful investigative stories, including “Blood and Sweat on the Fishing Boats”, “Children of the Ruins” and “The Island of Smokestacks”. Recently, its coverage of the “Massive Loss of Indigenous Reserved Land” influenced Taiwan’s Supreme Court to rule that fraudulent land sales are invalid. Another investigation, “Ugandan Students Exploited for Labour”, led to substantial interventions from the Ministry of Education and law enforcement, resulting in Chung Chou University’s ban on admissions and the university president’s five-and-a-half-year prison sentence for human trafficking, restoring fair education rights for Ugandan students.
The Reporter also continuously experiments with innovative storytelling to make complex issues more accessible, using data visualisation, interactive games and comics. Its podcast series invites reporters, experts and individuals involved in each story to provide insights, and it regularly hosts issue-focused lectures, reader meetups and sponsor events. The platform has even participated in music festivals, creating vibrant engagements to encourage the younger generation to explore important social topics.
Over the past nine years, The Reporter has earned numerous awards in Taiwan, Asia and internationally, including the SND Award for News Design, the SOPA Awards and the Hong Kong Human Rights Press Awards. In 2021, it received the Social Contribution Award from the Foundation for Excellent Journalism Award. Expanding its reach, The Reporter pioneered a paid licensing model and collaborates widely with international media, with content appearing on platforms such as Line Today and Yahoo. Additionally, its data graphics have been licensed to prominent outlets like The Washington Post and Radio Free Asia, helping to enhance international understanding of Taiwan’s issues.
