For Josh Kua, style has never been about chasing the next big thing.

It’s a considered language, a way to speak without words, as eloquent as his music. “Style is a kind of self-composure,” he says. “It should feel effortless, but never careless.”

When he first started, Josh gravitated toward sleek, structured looks—sharp, safe, and familiar. Over time, he experimented with more avant-garde and contemporary labels like Heliot Emil before coming full circle to what resonates most: heritage tailoring with modern details, unexpected textures, and pieces chosen with intention rather than trend. “In my 30s, I’ve learned to embrace what I instinctively liked when I was younger,” he says.

His most memorable style moment wasn’t on a runway or in a luxury boutique, but at an Indian-themed event. Wearing pieces sourced from local tailors in Brickfields, he won Best Dressed—a reminder that presence often outshines price tags. “Sometimes it’s just about how the garment makes you feel, and how it speaks.”

Josh draws inspiration from Yohji Yamamoto and Tilda Swinton, both masters of restraint and silhouette. Their ability to command attention without excess mirrors his own “presence without noise” approach.

When it comes to shopping, Josh blends practicality with discovery. He buys online for convenience, visits stores to assess fit and proportion, and thrift shops for unexpected gems, a habit that’s as sustainable as it is satisfying. His latest purchase? Another pair of black pants. “You can’t have too many. They’re a staple, and every fit tells a different story.”

Josh’s style isn’t static. It evolves alongside his perspective, shaped by a balance of precision and ease. Whether in sharp tailoring or a thrifted find, he wears each choice with quiet conviction, and that, for him, is the essence of style.

Style is a kind of self-composure.
