Although Johan Ku majored in advertising design in high school, he showed a strong interest in fashion when he studied in the Department of Fashion Design at Shu-Te University and in the Graduate Institute of Textiles and Clothing at Fu Jen Catholic University. In 2009, he obtained a master’s degree from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and in the same year won the Design Vision of Avant-Garde Award from Gen Art for his Emotional Sculpture series comprised of three-dimensional knitted woollen sweaters. After that, Johan shot to fame. He founded Johan Ku Design to introduce his design works to the world and in 2018 showed pieces for the 14th year at Tokyo Fashion Week. His creations have been successively exhibited in Taipei Fine Arts Museum and the Fashion and Textile Museum in London. Most notably, his Re-Sculpture and Emotional Sculpture series have become templates for British students learning knitwear design.
