Jimmy Lim

Architect, Jimmy Lim Design

One of Malaysia’s most highly decorated architects and heritage-conservation advocates, Jimmy Lim’s vast portfolio runs the gamut from places of worship and schools to tropical resorts

Professor Dr Jimmy Lim, one of Malaysia’s foremost architects, is best known for his award-winning projects such as The Salinger Residence, a striking Malay-style house south of Kuala Lumpur, which won him the coveted Aga Khan Award for Architecture. He specialises in tropical architecture, exemplified by the use of natural materials and multi-layered roofs for natural ventilation.

A native of Penang, Lim’s interest in architecture was awakened by his grandfather, who used to undertake his own house renovations and once constructed a concrete bridge to replace the collapsed wooden one in his village. Lim was also inspired by a visit to the Kek Lok Si Temple in his home state, where he learned about the way design can lead people through spaces.

Lim obtained his architectural degree in Australia and established his own eponymous practice after working at other firms. His vast and diverse portfolio ranges from bungalows, schools and high-rises to places of worship to resorts, including Kuala Lumpur’s Menara Prudential office tower, La Salle Sentul and St John’s Institution schools; Resorts World Awana in Genting Highlands; and an array of residences like the Schnyder House and TY Chiew House.
In 2020, Lim was honoured with the prestigious PAM Gold Medal Award for a lifetime of commitment and service to Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (Malaysian Institute of Architects), which he once served as president, as well as his contributions to the profession.

Lim is also one of the founding members of Badan Warisan, a non-governmental organisation that raises awareness of heritage issues and advocates for a conservation-friendly environment in Malaysia. He continues to practise architecture and also lectures.
