Founder of Plateau Studio
THE HYPESTERS | Plateau Studio’s Jerry Chien redefines style as honest dialogue, focusing on cut, proportion, and cultural meaning
For Jerry Chien, founder and designer of Plateau Studio, clothing is both a business card and a dialogue—practical yet powerful. He approaches each season as if it were the last, focusing on cut and proportion so that his pieces live on the streets before they ever enter the wardrobe.
“I’m actually not a big fan of the word ‘fashion,’” Jerry admits. To him, fashion is often just a cultural phenomenon, shaped by everyday life and transformed into something aspirational. He points to jeans as an example: once designed for miners, they were later repackaged and sold as coveted items worth months of a young person’s salary.
Jerry recognises that his work is part of this same transformation, but he chooses to approach it with honesty. With a touch of self-deprecation, he acknowledges that “everyone is essentially doing the same thing,” even if the process is not easy to explain.
