For giving breast cancer survivors dignity

Jason Pechardo is a researcher at the Surgical Innovations and Biotechnology Laboratory (SIBOL), a collaborative organisation that creates people-centred health technologies. In 2022, Brakong, a biodegradable prosthesis for breast cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomy that was co-developed by Jason and his partner Emmannuelle Pangilinan was named the national winner of the James Dyson Award. It is made from the native aquatic plant bakong, which has tough, antimicrobial fibres with numerous potential applications.
