Indonesia can take pride in what Jasmine Prasetio has done to elevate not just Indonesian art, but Southeast Asian art as a whole, in the prestigious world of auctions
Jasmine Prasetio

Los Angeles-born, Wellesley College-educated Jasmine Prasetio’s circuitous route to Indonesia started 17 years ago, when she joined Sotheby’s Singapore as an intern. Five years later, she found herself in Hong Kong with a new post in the same auction house, staying for a couple of years before settling in Indonesia in 2013.

Prasetio’s Hong Kong stint was definitely a high point in her career, where she was able to develop new programmes to address shifts in the art market. She pioneered a new auction category called “Boundless: Contemporary Art” in response to the emergence of next-gen artists and collectors. In 2012, Prasetio developed Sotheby’s Asian Art category, which sparked increased interest in regional art.

Indonesia’s art market is starting to shift, as new collectors come to the fore with different artistic preferences. This means another great opportunity for Prasetio to introduce the next wave of art and artists. In 2021, Sotheby’s in Paris held its first ever sale of Indonesia-originated artworks.
