This director's work offers a chance for local folklore to find new audiences on the big screen

Filipino stories can travel far beyond their point of origin when they are told with care and a clear sense of identity. Writer and director Januel Mercado brings this possibility to Forgotten Island, an animated feature inspired by Filipino folklore, made with DreamWorks Animation and featuring the voices of Liza Soberano, H.E.R. and Lea Salonga.

The film marks a significant moment for Filipino representation in mainstream animation, bringing elements of the country’s cultural heritage to international audiences through a medium with broad, cross-generational appeal. Mercado’s work also carries a personal connection to home. Among the moments he has treasured most was bringing the film to the Philippines to watch it with his family and the local Snipple animation team, whose work contributed to the production.

As Forgotten Island reaches more viewers, Mercado has spoken about the importance of seeing people connect with the story and feel represented by it. His ambitions extend beyond a single release: he hopes to build a filmography that encourages future generations of storytellers. In an industry where Filipino narratives remain underrepresented, his work offers a chance for local folklore to find new audiences on the big screen.
