A Malaysia-born Hollywood director recognised for redefining the horror film genre, James Wan is responsible for big-name releases such as The Conjuring and Aquaman

James Wan, a name synonymous with the horror genre, is the man behind some of Hollywood’s most commercially successful horror films to be released in the 21st century. The critically acclaimed Malaysian-born film director, screenwriter and producer is best known for the massively popular horror franchises Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring, superhero blockbusters Aquaman and Furious 7, and the seventh instalment of the Fast & Furious franchise.

Born in Kuching in the Bornean state of Sarawak, Wan and his family moved to Australia when he was seven. After he graduated with a media degree at RMIT University, Melbourne. he made his directorial debut with Saw, which he co-wrote with frequent collaborator Leigh Whannell. The movie’s incredible success at the box office led to a string of sequels that were also overwhelmingly well-received, cementing Saw as the world’s highest-grossing horror franchise of all time.

Since then, Wan has established himself as one of the most successful directors, producers and writers in Hollywood with one hit franchise after another. In 2015 and again in 2018, he proved that he was not bound exclusively to the horror genre when both Furious 7 and Aquaman grossed more than US$1 billion, with Wan being one of the few directors to achieve that milestone.

Wan has his own production company called Atomic Monster Productions and is currently working on several projects, including the sequel to Aquaman and a modern remake of Frankenstein.
