Textile fibre developer James Hou turns fish scales into fashion

James Hou was born into a group of business families in Tainan, Taipei. He combines his background in business and academic knowledge in biotechnology and fisheries as the general manager of Camangi Corporation. The company initially specialized in software and hardware technology and sales development for B2B communication. Under Hou’s direction, Camangi entered the textile business in 2012.

Hou saw the carbon footprint left behind by the industry and aimed to change this through the UMORFIL Bionic Fiber Technology. Through this innovation, food waste is valued up into textile material, which has passed the medical level of skin sensitisation and irritation testing, and produced into denim, outerwear, innerwear, home textile, and shoe products. Products of major textile factories on the market have mainly been using UMORFIL, bringing in more income for the aquaculture industry.
