Imee Romualdez Marcos

Senator, Republic of the Philippines

With two presidents in her immediate family, this Philippine senator is at the heart of power

Philippine senator Imee Romualdez Marcos is the eldest daughter of former president Ferdinand Marcos and sister of the current president, Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.

She began her political career during her father’s long-running regime, when she chaired Kabataang Barangay, the national youth council, from 1975 to 1986. Over the years, she served as the congressional representative of the second district of Ilocos Norte province from 1998 to 2007 and as governor of Ilocos Norte from 2010 to 2019.

Among the programmes, she has launched are Task Force Trabaho, to improve the country’s employment rate; and Paoay Kumakaway, to improve the tourism industry in the Ilocos Norte region. She also provided extensive relief for the victims of 2022’s Typhoon Noru.

As a senator, she has revived the Nutribun Feeding Program in collaboration with the National Nutrition Council and other government units. “We must restore the Nutribun Feeding Program’s place as a viable solution to under-nutrition among children. It can’t remain intermittent and sporadic advocacy,” she says. “There’s no more time to lose if the next generations of Filipino children are going to be healthy in body and mind, and ultimately productive as grown-up citizens.”
