Profile

Co-founder of the Green Ribbon Group and the eldest daughter of the current Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tengku Puteri Raja Tengku Puteri Iman Afzan Al-Sultan Abdullah is a mental health activist who actively pushes forward the mental health agenda in Malaysia.

The subject of mental health is one that is very close to Tengku Puteri’s heart. Having experienced her fair share of mental health challenges from adolescence to this day, she knows first-hand, the importance of de-stigmatising mental illnesses so that no one suffers in silence.

During her speech on World Suicide Day 2020 at the new crisis management centre of the Mental Illness Awareness and Support Association, Tengku Puteri Iman called for a reform to the suicide legislation in Malaysia, stating that criminalising suicide does not resolve the underlying causes or reduce the number of suicides in the country. She urged the federal government to decriminalise suicide to end the stigmatising of mental health and encourage people suffering from mental illnesses to come forward to seek help and treatment.

Efforts to further her cause led her to co-found the Green Ribbon Group in January 2021, a social enterprise for the advocating, fundraising and collaboration with stakeholders to create a holistic mental healthcare ecosystem in Malaysia in partnership with the Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA).

Tengku Puteri has served as Malaysia's Royal Patron of the Mental Illness Awareness and Support Association (Miasa) from 2018 to 2020. In 2020, following a recommendation by the World Federation for Mental Health, she was named the International Patron of World Mental Health Day by the World Health Organisation. She serves as the royal patron of the National Coalition for Mental Wellbeing as well as patron of J’keb Foundation, an organisation providing support for underprivileged teenagers.
